Cancer is a debilitating disease. It affects not only the physical aspect of a person. It also requires a big amount of money for medical needs. Nobody ever wants to have cancer – but when a member of the family happens to have the disease, depression sets in.

But not Norma Jean Bauerschmidt or simply Miss Norma, a 90-year-old lively lady from Presque Isle, Michigan. She got diagnosed with stage 4 uterine cancer, and she found out about it while she minded the last mortal days of her husband. Her doctor told her the final confirmation just two days after her husband’s death.

Upon her doctor’s advice, she needs to undergo chemotherapy and radiation. On the contrary, she told her doctor she does not want to have those treatments ever. At her age, she knew she had no chance even with the medical procedures. But even from the start, she was determined not to let the disease hold her down.

When the doctor asked her what she wants to do to address her illness, she said that she has accepted her condition and that she will not undergo any chemotherapy. Instead, she wants to explore the world with her dog and her family for the remaining days of her life. She wants to go with a bang!

Fortunately, her son Tim and daughter-in-law Ramie have a roving vehicle which they used in going around. For one year, they toured the country. They visited many beautiful places such as the Grand Canyon, NASA Station, etc.. Miss Norma rode a hot air balloon and gone cruising and whale watching.

Based on their travel diary, as chronicled in the Facebook account named “Driving Miss Norma,” their story has helped many people who are also dealing with cancer. They also touched the lives of those who have elderly parents or relatives who are nearing their lives’ end.

Most of the comments were about how to handle life’s challenges. Some even subscribed to her posts from day one until her last day. She died peacefully on October 2016 and was laid to rest beside her husband.

Her pet Ringo was always beside her throughout the journey. The dog even celebrated his 12th canine birthday on the road. His breed, Standard Poodle, usually has a life span of 12 years. So Tim and Ramie have also expressed their appreciation to the loyalty shown by the dog throughout the years. Even if Miss Norma is gone, they continue to give him the best comfort and keep him engaged while he is still with the couple.
